**Islamabad, Pakistan – April 16, 2025** – A bomb explosion in Pakistan’s Balochistan province killed three policemen and injured over a dozen more on Tuesday, April 15th. The Islamic State Khorasan Province (IS-K) claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that its “soldiers” targeted the police.
The bomb, planted on a parked motorcycle, detonated near a bus carrying approximately 40 policemen in Mastung city. Balochistan has long been plagued by sectarian, ethnic, and separatist violence. The IS-K, known for targeting security forces in both Pakistan and Afghanistan, has increased its activity in the region.
This attack follows a recent surge in violence in Pakistan’s southwestern regions bordering Afghanistan, with Islamabad blaming cross-border attacks emanating from Afghanistan. This claim is denied by the Taliban. Further escalating the volatile situation, separatist violence, including an attack on a passenger train last month, has resulted in numerous casualties.
The IS-K’s involvement in Pakistan extends beyond attacks on security forces; the group has also claimed responsibility for attacks on religious minorities and the targeted killings of religious scholars. In July 2023, a suicide bombing at a political party gathering, also claimed by IS-K, resulted in over 54 deaths, including 23 children. According to AFP, over 200 security officials have been killed in attacks by armed groups in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan since the start of the year. The latest attack underscores the ongoing security challenges facing Pakistan.
