**New York, April 17, 2025** – A 48-year-old Indian-American doctor, Neil K. Anand of Bensalem, Pennsylvania, has been found guilty of orchestrating a massive healthcare fraud scheme involving the illegal distribution of prescription drugs. A U.S. Federal Jury convicted Anand on multiple counts, including conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud, money laundering, and unlawful distribution of controlled substances.
Anand’s scheme involved the distribution of “Goody Bags” containing medically unnecessary medications to patients. These bags were a requirement to obtain prescriptions for controlled substances, including oxycodone. Medicare, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), Independence Blue Cross (IBC), and Anthem paid over $2.3 million for these unnecessary medications. The scheme also included unlicensed interns writing prescriptions using pre-signed blank prescriptions provided by Anand himself. He prescribed 20,850 oxycodone tablets to nine patients as part of the conspiracy.
Following an investigation, Anand was found to have concealed approximately $1.2 million in fraud proceeds by transferring the funds to his father’s account for the benefit of his minor daughter.
Anand faces a maximum sentence of 130 years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for August 19th, with the final sentence to be determined by a Federal District Court Judge based on sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. The conviction highlights a significant case of healthcare fraud and the illegal distribution of controlled substances within the U.S. healthcare system.
