**CHENNAI, April 17, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu government has announced a ₹5 crore investment to revitalize the Government Museum in Chennai ahead of its 175th anniversary in April 2026. The funds will be used for extensive renovations and improvements across the museum’s facilities.
A significant portion, ₹4 crore, will be dedicated to the modernization of the geology, botany, zoology, and anthropology galleries. An additional ₹1 crore will address infrastructure upgrades across the museum campus. Further investments include ₹30 lakh for a new light and sound system, ₹50 lakh for developing the chemical conservation section, and the introduction of buggies to aid senior citizens and children in navigating the grounds.
The state government also plans to enhance museums in Madurai and Theni with a ₹2 crore allocation and establish new museums in Tiruppur and Thoothukudi districts. The Connemara Cottage museum in Udhagamandalam will also undergo repairs costing ₹50 lakh. These improvements aim to enhance the visitor experience and preserve the historical significance of these cultural institutions.
