Wed Apr 16 09:57:42 UTC 2025: ## Vizianagaram Witnesses Protest Against Wakf Act Amendments
**VIZIANAGARAM, Andhra Pradesh, April 16, 2025** – A large protest took place today in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, against recent amendments to the Wakf Act. Organized by a Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising Muslim associations, the Congress party, and Left parties, the demonstration saw hundreds march from Ambati Satram junction to the Collector’s office.
Leaders of the JAC, including Shaik Mustafa and Habeeb Mohammed, voiced concerns that the amendments unfairly target the Muslim community. Habeeb Mohammed criticized the central government for its treatment of Muslims, alleging they are treated as second-class citizens. Mohammed Nasir, former vice-chairman and director of the Andhra Pradesh State Minorities Finance Corporation, expressed hope that the Supreme Court will overturn the amendments.
Congress party’s Vizianagaram district president, Maripi Vidyasagar, accused the Narendra Modi government of systematically targeting minorities and opposition parties. He pledged continued support for Muslim organizations and condemned what he called the government’s efforts to damage India’s secular image. The protest also included demonstrations against the Enforcement Directorate’s chargesheet against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. The protest highlights growing tensions over the controversial amendments to the Wakf Act.
