**Washington D.C./Beijing –** The US-China trade war intensified Tuesday with the White House announcing a staggering 245% tariff on Chinese imports. This dramatic escalation follows a series of retaliatory actions by both nations, pushing the conflict further off track.
The move comes as President Donald Trump initiated an investigation into national security risks stemming from US reliance on imported critical minerals, including cobalt, lithium, nickel, and rare-earth metals crucial for various industries, including smartphone and electric vehicle manufacturing, as well as military applications. The White House cited concerns about potential supply chain disruptions and vulnerabilities to national security, technological growth, and economic prosperity.
Prior to this escalation, tariffs had already reached 145% on Chinese imports into the US and 125% on American goods imported into China. China has also implemented export bans on certain goods.
Despite the increased tariffs, China reported a better-than-expected 5.4% economic growth in the first quarter, with industrial output climbing 6.5% and retail sales rising 4.6%. However, a top Chinese official warned that the US tariffs are placing pressure on the Chinese economy, and the government acknowledged the need for further measures to boost growth and consumption.
President Trump reiterated his stance that China must make the first move in any trade negotiations, asserting that the onus is on Beijing to reach a deal. He previously accused China of backtracking on a major Boeing aircraft deal. This latest escalation comes as Trump continues to push for reciprocal tariffs, aiming to either force other countries to lower their import taxes or revitalize American manufacturing and job creation. The President has levied substantial tariffs on imports from various countries since the beginning of the year, leading to market volatility.
China, meanwhile, has responded with retaliatory measures including suspending imports of certain agricultural products and filing a complaint with the World Trade Organization. They have also sought alliances with other nations, including India and the European Union, to counter US trade policies.
