Tue Apr 15 17:56:41 UTC 2025: ## Kozhikode’s Drug Disposal Pilot Project a Resounding Success

**Kozhikode, Kerala, April 16, 2025** – A pilot project launched in Kozhikode to safely dispose of unused and expired drugs has yielded impressive results, collecting approximately 24 tonnes of pharmaceuticals. The initiative, named nPROUD (New Programme for Removal of Unused Drugs), involved a multi-pronged approach including line collections from distributors, temporary collection centers, household collections via Haritha Karma Sena volunteers, and strategically placed drop boxes.

The Drugs Control department, spearheading the project, reported that 21 tonnes of the collected drugs have already been sent to Kerala Enviro Infrastructure Ltd. (KEIL) for environmentally sound disposal. This marks the largest single collection of its kind in the region, according to Assistant Drugs Controller Shaji Varghese.

The project, currently operating in Kozhikode Corporation and Ulliyeri grama panchayat, employed four distinct methods for drug collection. Around 14 tonnes were collected through line collections, five tonnes from temporary collection centers, and another five tonnes from households. Data from the drop boxes is still being compiled.

The initiative addresses significant environmental concerns. Health officials highlighted the dangers of improper drug disposal, noting that active chemical ingredients can contaminate groundwater and enter the food chain, contributing to antimicrobial resistance and pollution.

The success of the Kozhikode pilot program is expected to lead to its statewide expansion, aiming to ensure the safe disposal of pharmaceuticals in accordance with the Biomedical Waste Management Act. The program is hailed as a significant step towards protecting both public health and the environment.
