Tue Apr 15 02:27:26 UTC 2025: ## Iran-US Nuclear Talks Location Uncertain Amidst Trump’s Impatience
**Rome, Italy/Tehran, Iran –** The location of the next round of crucial nuclear talks between the United States and Iran remains in flux, shifting from Rome to Oman in a matter of hours. While Italian officials, including Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, initially confirmed Rome as the venue, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei subsequently announced the talks would return to Oman. This leaves the location uncertain, with neither the US nor Iranian officials publicly confirming the final venue.
The unexpected change follows President Donald Trump’s Monday expression of frustration over the slow pace of negotiations. He stated his belief that Iran is “tapping us along” and declared he expects to make a “very quick” decision regarding the future course of action. This comes as Iran continues to rapidly advance its nuclear program, enriching uranium to near weapons-grade levels.
The first round of talks took place in Oman over the weekend. The stakes are high, with President Trump previously threatening airstrikes against Iranian nuclear facilities if a deal isn’t reached, and Iranian officials warning of potential nuclear weapon pursuit. Despite Trump’s stated desire for Iran to be a “rich, great nation,” he emphasized their inability to possess nuclear weapons.
Adding to the complexity, Rafael Mariano Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will visit Iran later this week to discuss improving inspector access to Iranian nuclear facilities. The IAEA played a key role in verifying Iran’s compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal, which has since collapsed. That deal limited Iran’s uranium enrichment and lifted economic sanctions; its collapse reinstated sanctions and significantly hindered Iran’s oil sales.
While the US could offer sanctions relief, it remains unclear what concessions either side will make. Iran may insist on maintaining a higher level of uranium enrichment than the US desires. The issue of guarantees for fulfilling commitments remains a significant sticking point, particularly in light of past broken promises. Despite indirect talks mediated by Oman, direct negotiations remain contingent upon the cessation of sanctions and threats.
