Wed Apr 16 09:20:50 UTC 2025: ## Neglect at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Restoration at St. Patrick’s
**Chennai, April 16, 2025** – While one historic Chennai cemetery undergoes a significant renovation, another faces issues of neglect and safety concerns.
St. Mary’s Corporation Christian Cemetery on St. Mary’s Road in Mandaveli is plagued by overgrown vegetation, attracting snakes and raising concerns among visitors. A broken surveillance camera and a hole in the compound wall further exacerbate safety worries. The lack of functional security measures has prompted complaints from those visiting the graves of loved ones.
In stark contrast, St. Patrick’s Cemetery, a 217-year-old site near Central Railway Station, has recently undergone a major facelift under the leadership of Father Prakash, parish priest of Our Lady of Dolours Chapel. Improvements include an 800-foot compound wall, over 100 newly planted trees and flowers, 15 (with 10 more planned) solar-powered lights, concrete pathways, and a new church bell. Toilets and a washing area are currently under construction. Father Prakash highlighted the ongoing commitment to further enhance the cemetery with additional lighting and landscaping. The renovation reflects a commitment to preserving the cemetery’s dignity and ensuring a respectful environment for visitors.
