Wed Apr 16 06:46:51 UTC 2025: ## Seven Arrested After Assam Waqf Act Protests Turn Violent

**Silchar, Assam –** Seven individuals have been arrested following violent clashes between protestors and police in Assam’s Cachar district on Sunday, April 13th, 2025. The protests targeted the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.

According to Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta, the unauthorized march from Berenga Village towards Silchar town resulted in stone-throwing by protestors and a subsequent police lathi charge. Prohibitory orders have been imposed in the district to prevent further violence.

A police investigation led to the arrest of seven individuals on Tuesday, April 15th, who were subsequently remanded to judicial custody. Further arrests are anticipated. The SP emphasized that the prohibitory orders remain in effect and that any further attempts to breach the peace will not be tolerated.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Tuesday that no further protests against the Act will be permitted in the state, suggesting that protestors seek redressal through the Supreme Court. The Waqf (Amendment) Act aims to improve the management of Waqf properties, enhance transparency, and introduce technology-driven systems. However, the legislation has drawn criticism from various individuals and groups since its enactment earlier this month.
