Wed Apr 16 00:46:15 UTC 2025: ## Two Earthquakes Strike: Afghanistan and Philippines Tremble

**New Delhi, April 16, 2025** – Two moderate earthquakes struck different parts of the world on Wednesday, according to reports from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake hit the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan at a depth of 121 kilometers. The epicenter was located approximately 164 kilometers east of Baghlan. EMSC initially reported a higher magnitude of 6.4.

Separately, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao in the southern Philippines. This quake, measured at a depth of 30 kilometers by the USGS, caused no immediate reports of damage or casualties, according to local authorities. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology located the epicenter about 43 kilometers southwest of Maitum.

While both quakes registered a similar magnitude, their impact varied due to depth and location. The mountainous and sparsely populated area of the Philippines likely contributed to the lack of reported damage. The situation in Afghanistan is still being assessed.
