Wed Apr 16 09:43:10 UTC 2025: **India Plans 50 Airport Development Projects in Next Five Years**

NEW DELHI – The Indian government announced plans to undertake 50 airport development projects over the next five years, aiming to significantly boost the country’s aviation sector. This ambitious plan includes both the construction of new airports and the substantial upgrading of existing facilities.

Civil Aviation Secretary Vumlunmang Vualnam revealed the initiative on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, highlighting a holistic approach to developing the aviation ecosystem. This includes not only airport infrastructure but also support for airlines and expansion of flight training organizations.

India currently operates 159 airports, a number that has doubled since 2014. The government is prioritizing Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) for airport development and has established a streamlined land acquisition process, with state governments providing the necessary land.

Mr. Vualnam’s announcement came during the Airports Council International (ACI) Asia Pacific & Middle East Regional Assembly in New Delhi. A recent ACI analysis estimates that the Asia-Pacific region will require $240 billion in capital expenditure for airport development. Given India’s status as one of the world’s fastest-growing civil aviation markets, this significant investment underscores the nation’s commitment to expanding its air travel infrastructure. Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) recently achieved Level 5 Accreditation from ACI, marking another milestone for the country’s aviation sector.
