Tue Apr 15 16:38:39 UTC 2025: ## Kerala’s Ernakulam District to Resume Animal Birth Control Services, Plans Major New Center
**KOCHI, Kerala, April 15, 2025** – Two Animal Birth Control (ABC) centers in Ernakulam district, Kerala, which temporarily shut down due to funding issues, will resume operations on May 1st. The Mulanthuruthy and Vadavucode centers, capable of sterilizing 250 stray and domestic dogs daily, ceased operations at the end of March when their funding scheme expired. The district panchayat has secured renewed funding and will conduct interviews on April 22nd to hire staff, including animal handlers and doctors. Temporary doctors will be appointed via walk-in interviews until permanent hires are made.
Meanwhile, the district panchayat is planning a significantly larger ABC center in Aluva, to be built on a four-acre plot. This new facility, slated for completion by July-August, will initially focus on sterilization but will eventually include a shelter. Utilizing prefabricated construction, the Aluva center will serve 27 grama panchayats and seven municipalities, processing approximately 30 stray animals daily. The district panchayat president, Manoj Moothedan, highlighted the centre’s capacity to significantly improve animal welfare in the region.
