Wed Apr 16 02:25:53 UTC 2025: ## Canadian University Teachers Warned Against Non-Essential US Travel Amidst Heightened Border Scrutiny

**Halifax, April 16, 2025** – The Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) has issued a warning advising its members against non-essential travel to the United States due to increased border scrutiny and a politically charged atmosphere under President Donald Trump’s administration. This is the first such advisory in the association’s 11-year history.

The warning, issued Tuesday, April 15th, cites reports of Canadians and other foreign nationals facing lengthy detentions at the US border, sometimes exceeding seven days. The CAUT specifically cautions academics from countries with strained diplomatic ties to the US, those who have publicly criticized the Trump administration, and transgender individuals. Concerns over the potential compromise of sensitive research data stored on electronic devices during border searches also factor heavily into the advisory.

The warning comes as US-Canada border crossings have plummeted by approximately 32% (864,000 travelers) in March 2025 compared to the previous year, according to US Customs and Border Protection data. This decline is attributed to a combination of anxieties about Trump’s policies, including annexation threats and trade disputes, and heightened fears of border detention.

CAUT Executive Director David Robinson stated that the association acted after receiving legal counsel confirming the vulnerability of confidential research data during US border searches. The advisory will remain in effect until the CAUT observes a cessation of what it describes as “political screening” at the border and a greater respect for the confidentiality of information on electronic devices. The CAUT represents 70,000 academic professionals across 122 Canadian universities and colleges. The Canadian government has also updated its travel advisory to warn citizens of potential difficulties entering the US.
