Mon Apr 14 18:19:17 UTC 2025: ## Eight Killed in Andhra Pradesh Firecracker Factory Explosion

**VISAKHAPATNAM, Andhra Pradesh, April 15, 2025** – Eight people died in a firecracker factory explosion in Kailasapatnam village, Anakapalli district, on Sunday. The incident occurred after the factory, one of approximately 20 licensed units in north coastal Andhra Pradesh, received a large order for village deity festivals. Sources indicate the factory operated overtime to meet the increased demand.

Visakhapatnam Regional Fire Officer D. Niranjan Reddy stated that the surge in demand for firecrackers for various celebrations creates opportunities for manufacturers to prioritize profit over safety. He added that authorities are working to prevent future incidents. The Director General of the Fire Department, Madireddy Pratap, visited the site to investigate the cause of the explosion and identify preventative measures.

Environmentalist J.V. Ratnam highlighted the widespread use of firecrackers, noting their origin in China and current use beyond traditional religious contexts, even at funerals. High Court advocate S.K. Sri Krishna Yesaswi characterized the practice as primarily a social activity rather than a religious one.

Experts suggest the year-round demand for firecrackers in Visakhapatnam, fueled by the city’s thriving manufacturing, wholesale, and retail sectors, contributes to increased production and heightened risk for workers. The investigation into the explosion is ongoing.
