**Madurai, April 15, 2025** – A 41-year-old woman, Kalimathevi, has regained her mobility and independence after losing both legs due to complications from diabetes. Doctors at the Government Rajaji Hospital’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) Department fitted her with bilateral transfemoral prostheses following a comprehensive three-month rehabilitation program.

Kalimathevi, a mother of two, was admitted to the PMR department after losing her voluntary movement. According to Assistant Professor G. K. Scindia, the patient underwent a rigorous rehabilitation process including medication, and psychological support to prepare her body for the prostheses, which were fabricated at the hospital’s Advanced Life Support Care (ALSC).

The rehabilitation included psychological counseling and vocational training, crucial for helping Kalimathevi adapt to her new circumstances and regain her independence. The National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD) provided her with a three-wheeled battery-operated tricycle to aid her mobility.

Now, Kalimathevi works as a gig worker delivering food, a testament to the success of the rehabilitation program. Dr. Scindia emphasized that the program wasn’t just about extending her life but about improving the quality of her life. The case highlights the transformative impact of comprehensive rehabilitation for individuals facing limb loss.
