Tue Apr 15 13:35:26 UTC 2025: ## CAIR Reports Record High in Employment Discrimination Complaints, Blaming Anti-DEI Backlash
**Washington, D.C.** – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) announced today that it received a record-breaking 1,329 complaints of employment discrimination in 2024, surpassing even education-related complaints as the highest reported category in its 30-year history. This surge is attributed to a growing anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) climate fueled by recent political shifts and increased suppression of criticism regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The report highlights a significant increase in discrimination against Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim employees for expressing views critical of Israel’s actions in Gaza. CAIR cites numerous instances where employees were punished for voicing support for Palestine, while expressions of other racial or religious identities were tolerated. Examples include the firing of a nurse for mentioning the Palestinian genocide during an award acceptance speech and the dismissal of employees for organizing a vigil for victims in Gaza.
This trend, CAIR argues, is not isolated to individual incidents but reflects a broader societal shift. The organization points to a nationwide rollback of DEI initiatives in both the public and private sectors since the beginning of 2024, with many companies abandoning DEI targets and programs. While this trend accelerated recently, CAIR notes that a decline in commitment to diversity and inclusion began well before.
The sharp increase in complaints – a 1000% increase over 2022 – followed a noticeable spike at the end of 2023, coinciding with the start of the conflict in Gaza. CAIR emphasizes the double standard faced by Muslim and Arab employees, who are often discouraged from expressing pro-Palestinian views while other forms of identity expression are encouraged.
The organization warns that this is not merely an issue impacting Muslim, Arab, and Palestinian communities, but a threat to free speech and the broader principles of diversity and inclusion in the American workplace. CAIR calls for solidarity amongst diverse groups to resist what it sees as a dangerous trend of punishing dissent.
