**Washington D.C./Tehran** – President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Iran on Saturday, threatening military action against its nuclear facilities if the country continues its pursuit of nuclear weapons. His comments came as the US and Iran engaged in a second round of indirect talks aimed at reviving a nuclear deal, following positive discussions in Oman.
Trump accused Iran of intentionally delaying the negotiations and asserted that the country is nearing the development of a nuclear weapon. “They’re tapping us along,” he stated, adding that Iran “cannot have a nuclear weapon.” When asked if a military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities was a possibility, Trump responded unequivocally: “Of course it does.” He urged Iran to act swiftly to avoid a harsh response.
Iran, however, continues to deny any intention of developing nuclear weapons, maintaining its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
The indirect talks, facilitated through Oman and soon to continue in Rome, are exploring the parameters of a potential agreement. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will also visit Russia this week to discuss the negotiations. Russia and China, both parties to the 2015 nuclear deal (which Trump abandoned), are also involved in discussions with Iran.
While both the US and Iran described the Oman talks as “positive and constructive,” the renewed threat of military action casts a shadow over the diplomatic efforts. The negotiations follow a letter sent by Trump in March to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, proposing talks but reiterating the threat of military force. This marks a significant escalation in rhetoric since the indirect talks that yielded little progress under the Biden administration. The last direct negotiations between the two countries were during the Obama administration, which oversaw the 2015 nuclear deal.
