Tue Apr 15 14:21:26 UTC 2025: ## Madurai Transgender Community Appeals for Government-Funded Hostels

**Madurai, Tamil Nadu, April 15, 2025** – On National Transgender Day, members of the transgender community in Madurai appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to establish hostels in major cities. The lack of affordable and accepting housing is hindering their access to education and employment, they say.

Many transgender individuals, particularly those who have left their families to pursue opportunities, face rejection from private hostels and struggle to find safe and affordable housing. This often forces them into precarious living situations or causes them to abandon their educational and career goals.

V. Nithya, a transwoman pursuing a Bharatanatyam degree, highlighted the challenges. The lack of on-campus accommodation forces her to endure a four-hour daily commute from Tirunelveli, significantly impacting her studies. Transmen face additional hurdles, including societal misconceptions and difficulties with official documentation. They reported facing misgendering on identity documents like Aadhaar and PAN cards, leading to discrimination in employment and government services. One transman advocated for a centralized online portal to register identities safely, fearing potential harm from family members learning about their transition.

Despite government support through initiatives like the transgender welfare board, Priyababu, managing trustee of the Transgender Resource Centre, stressed that significant issues remain unaddressed. At an event on Tuesday, ten transgender students received educational assistance covering tuition fees and living expenses. While this offers immediate relief, the larger need for safe housing remains a crucial unmet need for the community’s overall well-being and progress.
