Tue Apr 15 02:05:54 UTC 2025: ## Maryland Man Convicted in 2023 Murder of Rachel Morin

**Bel Air, MD –** A jury found Victor Martinez-Hernandez, 24, guilty on Monday of the first-degree murder and rape of Rachel Morin, whose 2023 death on a popular hiking trail shocked the Bel Air community. The conviction comes after a trial that hinged on DNA evidence linking Martinez-Hernandez to the crime scene.

Prosecutors argued that Martinez-Hernandez, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador, carried out a premeditated attack, assaulting Morin before concealing her body. The defense contested the prosecution’s claim of a random attack, arguing police had the wrong suspect and highlighting unanswered questions regarding motive.

The victim’s family expressed relief at the verdict. Randolph Rice, their attorney, stated, “The Morin family is incredibly relieved that justice was served today.” Morin, 37, is survived by five children. Her 14-year-old daughter testified during the trial, emotionally recounting the aftermath of her mother’s disappearance.

Martinez-Hernandez, who was arrested in Oklahoma last summer, had allegedly been living in Bel Air at the time of the murder. Prosecutors presented evidence that included DNA found on Morin’s body, which matched DNA from socks left behind by the defendant when he fled Maryland.

The case gained national attention, becoming a political flashpoint during the 2024 presidential election. Donald Trump used the case to advocate for stricter border security and mass deportations. Following the verdict, Trump reiterated his stance on social media, blaming the Biden administration for the alleged border security failures. Authorities also linked Martinez-Hernandez to a 2023 home invasion in Los Angeles and alleged he entered the United States illegally after allegedly killing another woman in El Salvador.
