**New York City, NY –** New York City Mayor Eric Adams has officially proclaimed April 14th as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Day, honoring the legacy of the Indian jurist, economist, and social reformer. The announcement was made on Monday, April 14th, 2025, during a commemorative event at the UN headquarters, coinciding with Ambedkar’s 135th birth anniversary.
The declaration was made by Dilip Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner for the New York City Mayor’s Office for International Affairs, in the presence of Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale, who delivered the keynote address. Mr. Athawale expressed gratitude to Mayor Adams and Mr. Chauhan for recognizing Ambedkar’s global contributions to justice and equality.
Ambedkar, known as the “Architect of the Indian Constitution,” played a pivotal role in drafting India’s constitution and championed the rights of Dalits (formerly known as “untouchables”). He earned a PhD from Columbia University and served as India’s first Law Minister.
The proclamation was lauded by several individuals, including Deelip Mhaske, President of the Foundation for Human Horizon, who described it as a “moral declaration” positioning New York as a global leader in human rights. Mr. Athawale emphasized the continued relevance of Ambedkar’s principles of equity, representation, and human rights in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. He highlighted Ambedkar’s life as a beacon of hope, transcending barriers of caste, poverty, and colonial oppression to become a global advocate for equality. Prior to the UN event, Mr. Athawale also paid tribute at Ambedkar’s statue at Columbia University. The event served as a significant recognition of Ambedkar’s enduring influence on social justice movements worldwide.
