Tue Apr 15 16:30:21 UTC 2025: ## Uneasy Calm Prevails in Violence-Hit Murshidabad After Bengali New Year
**Kolkata, April 15, 2025** – An uneasy calm settled over the violence-stricken areas of Dhulian and Shamsherganj in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Tuesday, three days after widespread clashes related to the Waqf (Amendment) Act. While some shops reopened for Poila Baisakh (Bengali New Year), public activity remained subdued, with many displaced residents still hesitant to return home despite police assurances.
The unrest, which resulted in three deaths, has led to the arrest of 221 individuals. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested Kalu Nadaf and Dildar Nadaf for the alleged murder of Hargobind Das and his son, who were killed by a mob on April 12th. Nine more arrests were made in connection with separate violence in Bhangar, South 24 Parganas district.
Despite the relative calm, public anger persists, with demands for the permanent deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in affected areas like Domkal and Jafrabad. Over 20 CAPF companies are currently deployed following a Calcutta High Court intervention. Visiting political representatives faced public ire, with accusations leveled against some for alleged involvement in the violence.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has called for a judicial inquiry into the Murshidabad violence by a sitting Calcutta High Court judge. Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has scheduled a meeting with Imams and Muezzins on Wednesday to discuss the controversial Waqf Act, reiterating its non-implementation in the state. In a related development, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board canceled a planned Kolkata gathering. The situation remains tense as investigations continue and political figures grapple with the aftermath of the violence.
