Mon Apr 14 23:30:00 UTC 2025: **Illinois Freshman Star Will Riley Declares for NBA Draft**

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – University of Illinois freshman and Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year, Will Riley, has announced his intention to enter the 2023 NBA Draft, according to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony. Riley, a five-star recruit, joins teammate Kasparas Jakucionis in declaring for the draft.

Riley, a 6-foot-9 wing, averaged 12.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game in his freshman season. While his performance fluctuated throughout the year, he showcased impressive scoring ability, particularly in the final two months of the season where he averaged 15.9 points. His impressive college debut of 31 points against Eastern Illinois highlighted his offensive potential.

Illinois head coach Brad Underwood praised Riley’s work ethic and dedication, noting his significant weight gain and improvement throughout the season. Underwood stated that Riley “is one of the most gifted offensive talents I have ever coached.”

Riley’s draft stock varies among analysts. ESPN ranks him as the No. 15 prospect, while other outlets place him lower in the second round. The significant difference in projected draft position will likely influence Riley’s final decision, as a first-round pick offers a guaranteed substantial salary. A return to Illinois remains a possibility, especially if NBA teams don’t value him as highly as ESPN projects.

If both Riley and Jakucionis remain in the draft, they would become the first one-and-done draft picks in Illinois program history, marking a significant milestone for the Illini basketball program. This would also give Illinois first-round picks in back-to-back years for the first time since 2002-2003. Riley will participate in the NBA Draft Combine (May 11-18) before the final withdrawal deadline on May 28.
