**Cambridge, MA** – Harvard University is facing a $2.2 billion federal funding freeze after rejecting White House demands aimed at combating alleged anti-Semitism on campus. The administration’s action follows Harvard’s refusal to comply with a sweeping list of requirements impacting governance, hiring practices, admissions, and even the closure of diversity offices.

Harvard President Alan Garber, in a letter to students and faculty, vowed to defy the government, asserting the university’s right to independence and academic freedom. He stated that the university would not negotiate away its constitutional rights.

The White House, however, contends that the federal investment in Harvard comes with a responsibility to uphold civil rights laws and address what it terms unacceptable harassment of Jewish students. The administration cites recent campus protests against Israel’s actions in Gaza, some of which involved violence. Republicans have accused protestors of supporting Hamas.

This action follows a broader Department of Education investigation into 60 colleges and universities for alleged anti-Semitic discrimination. Previously, the administration placed $9 billion in Harvard funding under review before issuing the detailed list of demands, which included an audit of student and faculty views.

The $2.2 billion freeze encompasses multi-year grants and a further $60 million in government contracts. While Harvard reported a $45 million operating surplus last year, President Garber maintained that no government should dictate a private university’s academic pursuits, admissions, or hiring practices.

This stands in contrast to Columbia University’s response to similar accusations last year. After a $400 million funding cut, Columbia agreed to reforms and security enhancements. Two organizers of pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia are now facing deportation and arrest. Top Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik called for Harvard’s complete defunding, accusing the university of tolerating “raging anti-Semitism.” The situation highlights a growing tension between the federal government and elite universities over accusations of anti-Semitism and academic freedom.
