Mon Apr 14 17:30:00 UTC 2025: ## CERN’s CMS Experiment Wins $1 Million Breakthrough Prize for Fundamental Physics
**Geneva, Switzerland** – The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has been awarded a $1 million share of the 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. The prize recognizes the CMS collaboration’s groundbreaking work in several key areas of particle physics. This includes precise measurements of the Higgs boson, furthering our understanding of mass generation; the search for and potential discovery of new strongly interacting particles; investigations into rare particle processes and matter-antimatter asymmetry; and exploration of physics at the smallest scales and most extreme conditions.
Patricia McBride of Fermilab, spokesperson for the CMS collaboration, accepted the award on behalf of the team. The CMS portion of the prize money, totaling $1 million out of a $3 million award, has been donated to the CERN & Society Foundation. This donation will fund research grants for doctoral students from CERN member states, enabling them to conduct research at the world-renowned facility.
