Tue Apr 15 03:30:00 UTC 2025: **Padres Center Fielder Lockridge Suffers Hamstring Strain, Team Faces Depth Concerns**

SAN DIEGO, CA – The San Diego Padres are facing a potential crisis in their outfield after center fielder Brandon Lockridge exited Sunday’s game with a hamstring strain. The injury occurred during a seventh-inning double-play attempt in a 6-0 victory.

While an ultrasound revealed inflammation but no significant muscle tear, Lockridge’s injury comes just days after fellow center fielder Jackson Merrill was placed on the 10-day injured list with the same ailment. Lockridge described the injury as a “low-grade” strain and anticipates a day-to-day recovery.

Lockridge, who had made the team as a fourth outfielder, has been a regular starter in center field due to Merrill’s absence. His performance this season has been inconsistent, hitting only .194/.265/.258 through 13 games.

The Padres’ thin outfield depth is now a significant concern. With Merrill already sidelined and unable to perform explosive movements, the team has limited options to replace Lockridge. Oscar Gonzalez was called up earlier this week to fill in for Merrill, but his experience in center field is limited. Other potential replacements, such as veteran Jason Heyward and Tyler Wade, have limited experience or inconsistent performance in center field.

Manager Mike Shildt expressed confidence in finding a solution, stating, “Winners find solutions. Somebody’s going to play center field and we expect them to go and do it well.” However, the Padres may need to creatively utilize their roster, potentially shifting Fernando Tatis Jr. to center field or making further roster moves, to ensure they have adequate coverage in the position.
