VISAKHAPATNAM, April 15, 2025 – The Bengali community in Visakhapatnam enthusiastically celebrated Poila Baisakh, the Bengali New Year, on Tuesday. The day’s events showcased a strong connection to Bengali heritage, spirituality, and community.
Celebrations began with a Prabhat Pheri, an early morning procession organized by the East Coast Railway Kalibari. Participants, dressed in traditional attire, walked along R.K. Beach Road, singing songs by Rabindranath Tagore. City Police Commissioner Shanka Brata Bagchi participated, singing along and later distributing saplings to promote environmental awareness.
The East Coast Railway Kalibari served as the central location for the day’s festivities. Devotees attended special pujas, seeking blessings for the new year. Evening events included cultural performances such as classical music, traditional Bengali dance, and recitations.
Organizers emphasized the importance of preserving Bengali traditions, even away from their homeland, to pass on values to younger generations. The event fostered a sense of community and nostalgia among the city’s Bengali diaspora, highlighting the richness of Bengali culture and the community’s commitment to preserving it in their adopted home.
