**Kolkata, India** – A preliminary investigation into the recent violence in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district points to the involvement of suspected Bangladeshi infiltrators, according to a report received by the Union Home Ministry from Central forces deployed in the state. The unrest, sparked by protests against an amended Waqf law, resulted in three deaths, widespread arson, and the displacement of numerous families.
The violence, which began on April 13th, saw clashes across multiple areas including Suti, Samserganj, Dhulian and Jangipur. Over 200 arrests have been made, but residents remain deeply shaken. The Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of Central forces last week in response to the escalating situation. The report suggests that the infiltrators were supported by local elements and that the violence intensified when the infiltrators lost control.
Further unrest erupted yesterday in South 24 Parganas, where supporters of the Indian Secular Front clashed with police in Bhangar, setting police vehicles ablaze and causing significant damage.
The Union Home Ministry is closely monitoring the situation, with the Home Secretary maintaining regular contact with West Bengal’s Chief Secretary and police chief. Central Police Forces have been deployed at the state government’s request to restore order.
Meanwhile, two petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court demanding a court-monitored investigation into the violence. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced that her government will not implement the amended Waqf law, intended to regulate the administration of Muslim charitable properties.
