Mon Apr 14 06:25:55 UTC 2025: ## Xi Jinping’s Southeast Asia Tour Aims to Strengthen Ties Amidst US Trade Tensions

**Hanoi, Vietnam –** Chinese President Xi Jinping began a Southeast Asian tour in Vietnam on Monday, April 14, 2025, emphasizing the importance of multilateralism and warning against protectionism in the face of ongoing US-China trade tensions. His visit, encompassing Vietnam, Malaysia, and Cambodia, aims to bolster regional trade ties and mitigate the impact of significant US tariffs imposed earlier this year.

Xi’s arrival in Hanoi was met with a welcoming ceremony, including well-wishers waving Chinese flags. In a statement released by Xinhua, he expressed his eagerness to discuss bilateral relations with Vietnamese leaders, highlighting their global significance. He reiterated China’s stance against trade wars and protectionism, emphasizing that such actions benefit no one. These sentiments were echoed in an article published in Vietnam’s Nhan Dan newspaper.

Vietnam, Southeast Asia’s largest importer of Chinese goods in 2024 ($161.9 billion), is a key focus of Xi’s diplomatic efforts. Approximately 40 cooperation agreements are expected to be signed during his visit. Vietnam’s top leader, To Lam, expressed the country’s commitment to deepening and strengthening cooperation with China.

While both nations enjoy a comprehensive strategic partnership, Vietnam’s “bamboo diplomacy” – maintaining good relations with both China and the US – remains a cornerstone of its foreign policy. Although close economic ties exist, concerns persist in Hanoi regarding Beijing’s assertive stance in the South China Sea, a point Xi addressed by calling for dialogue and negotiation to resolve disputes.

Xi’s tour will continue to Malaysia (April 15-17), and conclude in Cambodia (April 17), a long-standing ally of China. The Malaysian government highlighted the importance of Xi’s visit for improving trade relations with China. This Southeast Asia tour marks Xi’s first overseas trip of the year and reflects China’s strategy to counter the impact of US trade policies by strengthening alliances in the region.
