Mon Apr 14 06:53:52 UTC 2025: ## Deadly Russian Missile Strike on Sumy Kills 34, Sparks International Outrage

**Sumy, Ukraine –** A devastating Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Sumy on April 13, 2025, killed at least 34 people, including two children, and injured over 100 more, sparking widespread international condemnation. The attack, which targeted the city center, damaged numerous buildings including a university, apartment complexes, and businesses. Rescue workers are still clearing the rubble.

The strike, described by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as the act of “completely deranged scum,” occurred on Palm Sunday, a major Christian holiday. Zelenskyy urged U.S. President Donald Trump, who is actively pursuing peace negotiations with Russia, to visit Ukraine to witness the devastation firsthand before engaging in further diplomatic efforts.

President Trump called the attack a “horrible thing” and a “mistake,” although he did not clarify who made the alleged error. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio termed the attack “horrifying” and highlighted the ongoing U.S. efforts to achieve a lasting peace.

International leaders echoed the condemnation. French President Emmanuel Macron denounced Russia’s “blatant disregard for human lives,” while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his “appall” and German chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz called it a “serious war crime.”

The attack utilized two Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles, according to Ukraine’s GUR military intelligence. It marks the second major Russian attack this month resulting in significant civilian casualties, following a strike on Zelenskyy’s hometown of Kryvi Rig.

Despite ongoing peace talks initiated by the U.S., involving both Russia and Ukraine, and discussions amongst European nations regarding a potential military deployment to support a ceasefire, the conflict continues. Kyiv has previously agreed to a U.S.-proposed unconditional ceasefire, but Moscow has rejected it. Zelenskyy stressed that “talking has never stopped ballistic missiles and bombs,” urging a stronger response from the U.S. and Europe. The UN Secretary-General also expressed deep alarm at the attack.

Sumy, located near the Russian border, has been under increasing pressure recently, with Kyiv warning of a potential Russian offensive. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine partially traversed the Sumy region, resulting in brief occupation before Ukrainian forces pushed them back. This latest attack further escalates the ongoing conflict and underscores the urgent need for a peaceful resolution.
