Mon Apr 14 09:09:28 UTC 2025: ## Telangana Implements Sub-Caste Reservations for Scheduled Castes

**Hyderabad, April 14, 2025** – Telangana has become the first state in India to implement a sub-categorization of Scheduled Castes (SCs) for reservation purposes, following a landmark Supreme Court ruling. A gazette notification issued today, April 14th, 2025, designates this date as the commencement day for the Telangana Scheduled Castes (Rationalisation of Reservations) Act, 2025.

The act divides the SC community into three groups, allocating reservation percentages based on socio-economic factors. Group I, encompassing 15 of the most backward sub-castes (constituting 0.5% of the SC population), receives 1% reservation. Group II, comprising 18 sub-castes, gets 9% reservation, while Group III, with 26 sub-castes, receives 5% reservation. 33 sub-castes remain in their previously assigned groups.

The categorization, finalized by a cabinet sub-committee, aims to address disparities within the SC community, providing greater opportunities to the most marginalized groups. The government emphasized that this categorization will only apply to future government job recruitments and will not affect already-announced vacancies. Further enhancements to SC reservations are planned based on data from the upcoming 2026 Census. The initiative marks a significant step towards achieving greater social justice and equity within the state.
