Mon Apr 14 06:37:46 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu’s Annual Fishing Ban Begins, Sends Fish Prices Soaring
**Chennai, April 14, 2025** – The annual 61-day fishing ban along Tamil Nadu’s coast went into effect today, April 15, 2025. This will leave 809 mechanized boats in Chennai harbor idle until mid-June. The Fisheries Department has also cautioned traditional fishermen against venturing into Andhra Pradesh waters, where fishing is also banned for traditional crafts. A retired official cited past incidents of Tamil Nadu fishermen being attacked and robbed in Andhra Pradesh waters, emphasizing the need to avoid such confrontations.
High fish prices marked the final weekend before the ban. Seer fish reached ₹900-₹1000/kg, white pomfret ₹1100/kg, red snapper ₹500-₹600/kg, and sardines ₹100-₹20/kg at Kasimedu fishing harbor. During the ban, consumers can expect fish from Kerala and Karnataka to fill the gap in the market, along with direct purchases from fishermen landing their boats.
