**Chennai, India** – Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi is facing intense criticism after allegedly compelling students to chant “Jai Shri Ram” at a recent function. This latest controversy follows a Supreme Court rebuke for his prolonged withholding of assent to 10 state bills.
The Governor’s actions have drawn condemnation from the ruling party and academic bodies, with the State Platform for Common School System – Tamil Nadu (SPCSS-TN) calling for his immediate removal. The SPCSS-TN statement alleges that Governor Ravi violated his oath of office and Article 159 of the Indian Constitution by his actions.
Senior Congress leader Sasikanth Senthil took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his criticism, suggesting the Governor’s actions were a deliberate attempt to provoke the state government following the Supreme Court’s ruling against him. Senthil characterized the incident as a “stunt” and expressed concern over the Governor’s “dangerous mix of arrogance and defiance.”
NDTV’s attempts to obtain a response from Raj Bhavan have been unsuccessful.
This incident follows a significant Supreme Court ruling earlier this week that declared Governor Ravi’s refusal to assent to 10 bills illegal and arbitrary, deeming his actions to be in bad faith. The court subsequently ordered the bills to be considered passed. The Governor’s latest actions are further escalating tensions between his office and the state government.
