**Kyiv, Ukraine –** A devastating Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Sumy on April 13, 2025, resulted in the deaths of at least 32 civilians, including one child, and injured 84 more, seven of whom were children. The attack, which occurred around 10:15 a.m. local time during Palm Sunday celebrations, saw two ballistic missiles strike the city center. Graphic videos circulating online show the aftermath, with bodies strewn amongst debris and smoke.
Acting Mayor Artem Kobzar described the event as a “terrible tragedy,” while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, stating that “dozens of civilians were killed and wounded,” and calling the perpetrators “filthy scum.” He further urged the global community to respond decisively to this act of terror and demanded a shift in the international attitude towards Russia, characterizing it as a terrorist state.
The attack comes just a day after both Russian and Ukrainian foreign ministers accused each other of violating a U.S.-brokered agreement to temporarily halt strikes on energy infrastructure, highlighting the ongoing challenges in negotiating an end to the three-year war. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed Ukraine initiated most of the attacks, while his Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, countered that Russia had launched numerous missiles and drones targeting civilians.
This marks the second major attack targeting civilians in just over a week, following a deadly missile strike on President Zelenskyy’s hometown of Kryvyi Rih on April 4th. The international community is expected to respond to this latest escalation in the conflict.
