**Singapore, April 14, 2025** – Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) will include Indian candidates in its upcoming general election, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced Sunday. This follows criticism over the absence of Indian candidates among the PAP’s new faces in the 2020 election.
PM Wong acknowledged the significant contributions of the Indian community to Singapore’s economy and public service, emphasizing their “outsized impact” despite representing a smaller percentage of the population (7.6% in 2024). He highlighted the unique blend of Indian heritage and Singaporean identity within the community.
The announcement came during a dialogue with young Indian Singaporeans, where PM Wong confirmed that new Indian candidates would be part of the PAP’s slate, although he did not reveal names. Several potential candidates, including individuals from various professional backgrounds, have been publicly linked to the party. The opposition Workers’ Party is also reportedly considering Indian candidates.
The PAP plans to field over 30 new candidates in total, the largest number in recent history, according to PM Wong. The election is expected within the next month, with potential candidates already engaging with voters in community centers. The dialogue, organized by Tamil Murasu, also addressed concerns about cost of living, housing, and the need for vigilance against extremist views. Senior Minister of State Janil Puthucheary, himself of Indian descent, also participated. The event was held under Chatham House rules, ensuring candid discussion without attribution.
