**DHAKA, BANGLADESH** – Ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina launched a scathing attack on the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, accusing him of orchestrating a foreign conspiracy to seize power. In an eight-minute virtual address to supporters Sunday, Hasina, currently in self-imposed exile in India, branded Yunus a “self-centered loan shark” and accused him of erasing Bangladesh’s history and persecuting members of her Awami League party.
Hasina reiterated her claims of a foreign conspiracy aimed at destroying Bangladesh, alleging that Yunus used foreign funds to destabilize the country with the help of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami. She claimed the current regime has led to widespread economic hardship, factory closures, and the targeting of Awami League members. A new arrest warrant has been issued for her in Dhaka.
A key point of contention is the death of student activist Abu Sayeed, a prominent figure in the quota protests preceding Hasina’s ouster. While a UN report concluded Sayeed was a victim of extrajudicial killing by police, Hasina insisted he was killed by a stray rock during clashes, alleging that Yunus removed officials who were investigating the incident and the source of a 7.62 mm bullet found at the scene. She called for Sayeed’s body to be exhumed for a forensic examination.
Hasina also accused the interim government of widespread human rights abuses, including the arbitrary arrests and persecution of political opponents, the sacking of top medical professionals, and the replacement of police officers with unqualified political workers. She described the situation as a looming “doomsday” for Bangladesh.
The interim government, meanwhile, has requested India’s assistance in preventing Hasina from making further destabilizing statements. This request follows previous concerns raised by India over reported atrocities against Bangladesh’s Hindu minority. The situation remains highly volatile as Hasina continues to denounce the current administration from her exile in India.
