HYDERABAD, INDIA (April 14, 2025) – The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad is significantly enhancing the lives of Parkinson’s disease patients through advanced treatments and comprehensive care. The institute’s dedicated Movement Disorder Clinic offers a range of options, including Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery, now made more accessible by inclusion under Telangana government health schemes like Aarogyasri and the Employee Health Scheme.

Since August 2024, over 93 patients have received DBS surgery at NIMS under these schemes. DBS, typically recommended after medication becomes ineffective, involves implanting electrodes in the brain to manage symptoms with minimal risk thanks to refined surgical techniques. Additional treatments such as ablation procedures are also available for suitable patients.

Dr. Sireesha Yareeda, a senior neurologist at NIMS, emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and treatment for better long-term outcomes. She notes that with timely intervention, including medication and surgery, Parkinson’s patients can maintain active lives. Dr. Yerramneni Vamsi Krishna, head of neurosurgery, further highlighted the benefits of these advanced treatments. The clinic also addresses related movement disorders such as dystonia and tremors. NIMS’s commitment to improving the quality of life for Parkinson’s patients is making a substantial impact in the region.
