**New York, NY** – A hands-on preview of Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 reveals a powerful handheld console with impressive features, but leaves some questioning the necessity of an upgrade for current Switch owners. The $450 device boasts a larger 7.9-inch LCD screen (1080p, HDR, up to 120Hz), improved Joy-Cons with magnetic attachment and a new C button for quick access to in-game voice chat, and a redesigned dock supporting 4K output on TVs.
The preview showcased several titles, including launch titles *Mario Kart World* and *Donkey Kong Bananza*. *Mario Kart World*, a standout, offers open-world racing with 24-player online capabilities. *Donkey Kong Bananza*, an unexpected open-world adventure, impressed with its dynamic graphics and innovative digging mechanic. Remastered versions of *Zelda: Breath of the Wild* and *Tears of the Kingdom*, along with *Kirby and the Forgotten Land*, also received graphical enhancements. Third-party titles like *Cyberpunk 2077* and *Split Fiction* were playable, highlighting the Switch 2’s ability to run more demanding games, though performance varied. A new virtual console offering GameCube titles, accessible via Nintendo Switch Online Plus Expansion Pack, adds further appeal.
While the hardware improvements are substantial, the reviewer found the overall gaming experience to be an evolution rather than a revolution. While the new games were enjoyable, they didn’t offer groundbreaking gameplay innovations. Furthermore, the increased price of the console, along with higher prices for game upgrades and even a paid tutorial game, raised affordability concerns, particularly given the current economic climate.
The reviewer concluded that the Switch 2 is a superior piece of hardware compared to its predecessor, and especially competitive with other handheld gaming systems like the Steam Deck, but that whether or not it’s a “must-buy” depends largely on individual budgets and preferences. The system launches June 5th.
