**Kolkata, April 14, 2025** – Following recent violent unrest in Murshidabad district, West Bengal’s BJP is demanding the imposition of President’s rule before the 2026 Assembly elections. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari alleges a complete breakdown of law and order, citing the inability of the state government to protect its citizens.
The violence, stemming from protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, has left at least three dead and numerous injured. Hundreds of people, mainly from Hindu minority communities, have reportedly fled their homes, seeking refuge in neighboring Malda district. Visuals depict widespread destruction of property, including shops, homes, and hotels.
Adhikari claims the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) is allowing jihadist elements to operate freely and accuses the police of being complicit. He asserts that Hindus in minority areas are prevented from voting and called for President’s rule to ensure free and fair elections. The BJP MP has also urged the central government to declare four West Bengal districts as “Disturbed Areas” under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).
In response, senior TMC leader and state minister Firhad Hakim stated that people are relocating within the state, not fleeing, and that the administration is working to restore normalcy. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced that the amended Waqf Act will not be implemented in West Bengal.
The Calcutta High Court has already ordered the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in the affected areas following a petition filed by Adhikari. The situation remains tense as the state prepares for next year’s crucial Assembly elections.
