**Bangkok, April 13, 2025** – A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck central Myanmar this morning, the latest tremor to hit the region following a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake on March 28th. The epicenter of Sunday’s quake was located roughly halfway between Mandalay and Naypyitaw, near Meiktila.
While initial reports indicate no major damage or casualties from this latest quake, it is one of the strongest aftershocks from the March 28th event which left 3,649 dead and 5,018 injured, according to Myanmar’s military government. Two residents of Wundwin township, near the epicenter, reported feeling strong shaking and damage to some buildings. A Naypyitaw resident, however, did not feel the tremor.
The March 28th earthquake caused widespread destruction, particularly in Mandalay, and severely impacted agricultural production and medical facilities. The United Nations has warned that the damage will exacerbate the existing humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, which is already grappling with a civil war that has displaced over three million people. The new earthquake struck on the first day of the Thingyan New Year holiday, a time of celebration that has been cancelled due to the ongoing crisis. The depth of the quake is estimated at between 7.7 km (USGS) and 20 km (Myanmar Meteorological Department).
The situation continues to unfold, with ongoing concerns about the long-term consequences of the earthquakes and their impact on a nation already struggling with conflict and humanitarian needs.
