**New Delhi, April 14, 2025** – Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge today accused the BJP-RSS of being enemies of B.R. Ambedkar and the Modi government of paying mere lip service to his legacy on the occasion of Ambedkar’s birth anniversary. Addressing reporters at a floral tribute ceremony in Delhi, Kharge cited a letter by Ambedkar himself highlighting the role of S.A. Dange and V.D. Savarkar in his 1952 election defeat, countering Prime Minister Modi’s criticism of the Congress’s treatment of Ambedkar.
Kharge demanded a nationwide caste census and the implementation of reservations for SCs, STs, and OBCs in private educational institutions. He highlighted the lack of a caste census since 2011, criticized the government’s inaction on Article 15(5) guaranteeing reservations in private educational institutions, and called for a central law to guarantee budgetary allocations for SC/ST sub-plans, removing the 50% reservation cap. He further stressed the need for immediate implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill, including quotas for SC, ST, and OBC women.
The Congress leader emphasized the importance of Ambedkar’s Constitution in guaranteeing social, economic, and political justice, claiming the party’s Ahmedabad session furthered these ideals. Kharge concluded by stating that the Modi government only pays lip service to Ambedkar’s ideals without fulfilling his aspirations. The Congress’s demands include a nationwide caste census, implementation of existing reservation policies, and removal of the 50% reservation cap.
