WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced extended tax deadlines for taxpayers in several states affected by natural disasters in 2024. The original deadline for filing 2024 tax returns was April 15, 2025.
The most significant extension affects residents of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, along with parts of Alaska, New Mexico, Tennessee, and Virginia. These areas were granted an automatic extension until May 1, 2025, due to FEMA disaster declarations stemming from hurricanes and severe storms. Hurricane Helene, which caused over 215 deaths, significantly impacted North Carolina and several other states.
Further extensions have been granted to specific counties. Los Angeles County, California, has an October 15, 2025, deadline due to January wildfires. Kentucky and parts of West Virginia have a November 3, 2025, deadline due to severe February storms.
The IRS urges affected taxpayers to visit their website for a complete list of affected areas and specific deadlines. Taxpayers are advised to check the IRS website for details and confirmation before filing.
