**New Delhi, April 15, 2025** – Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced yesterday that the Ministry is working on an agreement to allow private laboratories to analyze forensic samples currently handled solely by government facilities. This announcement came during the All India Forensic Science Summit 2025, organized by the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU).
Shah highlighted the growing need for forensic experts, citing new criminal laws requiring trained professionals at crime scenes involving sentences exceeding seven years. He stated that the NFSU, established in 2020, is graduating approximately 36,000 students annually, many of whom will contribute to the private forensic sector. The university currently has seven campuses, with plans to add nine more in the next six months and a further ten proposed.
The Minister emphasized the importance of forensic science in strengthening India’s criminal justice system, aligning with the principles enshrined in the Constitution. He also advocated for categorizing offenders based on their criminal history and motivations, proposing psychological counseling for incarcerated individuals to promote rehabilitation and responsible citizenship. Shah’s remarks paid tribute to B.R. Ambedkar on his birth anniversary, acknowledging his contribution to the Indian Constitution.
