**Vijayawada, April 14, 2025** – Andhra Pradesh is bracing for a surge in electricity demand this summer, with peak consumption already hitting a record high of 256.8 million units (MUs) on March 28th, according to the A.P. State Load Dispatch Centre. Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand, who also serves as Special Chief Secretary (Energy), announced that the state’s power utilities are prepared to meet the projected daily consumption of 260 MUs.
Vijayanand, speaking at a tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on Monday, emphasized the government’s commitment to providing uninterrupted power supply across the state, including its most remote areas. He highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure cost-effective power for both domestic and industrial consumers. A key priority remains the provision of nine hours of free daily power to farmers.
Data from January to March 2025 shows a slight increase in energy demand compared to the same period last year (20,498 MUs vs 20,475 MUs). To manage the anticipated rise in demand, power utilities are implementing proactive measures.
The government is also providing substantial power tariff subsidies, including heavily subsidized rates for aquaculture farmers (₹1.50 per unit, with the government covering ₹2.35 per unit for farms up to 10 acres), free power for SC/ST households (up to 200 units per month, plus free rooftop solar systems up to 2KW), and concessions for various other sectors, such as handloom and powerloom industries, horticultural nurseries, and goldsmiths. A special tariff of ₹3.75 per unit has been implemented for the rolled-gold industry in Machilipatnam.
