Chennai, Tamil Nadu – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will convene a meeting on April 16th with vice-chancellors and registrars of all state universities to discuss improvements in higher education. This meeting follows a landmark Supreme Court ruling last week that deemed several university-related bills, previously stalled, as having received assent. The state government subsequently notified 10 university-related Acts, the first to become law without the Governor’s assent.
The meeting’s significance stems from the Supreme Court’s decision and the recent notification of the Acts. These Acts aim to ensure that vice-chancellors, previously appointed by Governor R.N. Ravi, comply with the state government’s directives. There have been instances of non-compliance, particularly concerning the state’s differing stance on the National Education Policy (NEP) compared to the Governor’s strong advocacy for its implementation. The demand for grants for the Higher Education Department will be discussed in the Assembly on April 24th.
