**Worksop, Nottinghamshire –** A man in his 50s died in a house explosion on John Street, Worksop, on Saturday evening, triggering a major incident response and displacing dozens of residents. The blast, which occurred shortly before 8 pm BST, completely destroyed two terraced houses and caused damage to neighboring properties.

Emergency services, including specialist urban search and rescue teams, responded immediately. Following a search of the debris, police confirmed the death of the man, who was found in the wreckage. While emergency services treated him at the scene, they were unable to save his life. His family has been informed and is receiving support from police.

The incident led to the evacuation of 35 properties, affecting 48 residents who were provided with temporary accommodation at the nearby Crown Place Community Centre, with others staying with family and friends. Bassetlaw District Council’s leader, Julie Leigh, confirmed the support efforts.

Witnesses described hearing a loud bang followed by shaking houses and thick black smoke. One resident recounted seeing people rushing towards the damaged houses to try and help. On Sunday afternoon, the fire service concluded its search, and demolition crews began preparing to address dangerous structures. A gas company was also seen at the scene.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Ch Insp Clive Collings described the incident as “extremely serious” and acknowledged the shock it has caused in the community. Local businesses, such as Today’s Local shop, are providing aid to those affected.
