Sun Apr 13 15:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Piastri Takes Pole in Thrilling Bahrain GP Qualifying; McLaren Dominates, but Norris Suffers Setback
**Manama, Bahrain** – Oscar Piastri secured his second career pole position in a dramatic qualifying session for the 2025 Bahrain Grand Prix, leading a McLaren one-two in the final practice session. However, his teammate Lando Norris endured a disappointing qualifying, finishing sixth after a Turn 1 mistake on his final run.
McLaren’s dominance in FP3, where they were significantly faster than the rest of the field, set the stage for a highly anticipated qualifying session. Despite opting to use used tyres in the shootout, Piastri secured pole with ease, demonstrating his skill and the car’s superior pace. Norris, however, struggled to replicate his teammate’s performance, ultimately missing out on a front-row start. He expressed his frustration but remained optimistic about McLaren’s strong race pace.
George Russell, driving for Mercedes, delivered a surprising challenge to Piastri, securing second place on the grid and pushing the McLaren driver closer than expected, despite McLaren’s practice advantage. His teammate, Kimi Antonelli, qualified fourth. Both Mercedes drivers were later handed grid penalties for qualifying rule breaches.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc delivered a strong performance, securing third place, after a late push. Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, continued to struggle with his upgraded car, qualifying in ninth.
Other notable performances included Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, who secured fifth, and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, who qualified 13th, but will now start from 12th after a penalty. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda qualified seventh and tenth respectively, highlighting the team’s struggles throughout the weekend. Williams’ Carlos Sainz qualified eighth, out-qualifying his teammate Alex Albon, who faced qualifying setbacks due to traffic issues.
Several drivers experienced setbacks during qualifying. Haas’ Esteban Ocon spun out and ended his session, while teammate Kevin Magnussen struggled with front-locking. Red Bull endured a difficult session, struggling with car balance and brakes. Other notable incidents included a DRS malfunction for Red Bull’s Liam Lawson and track limits infringements resulting in penalties for several drivers.
The race promises to be a captivating contest, with potential for overtaking and variable conditions expected to play a major role. Tyre degradation is also anticipated to be a significant factor influencing race strategies.
