EL-FASHER, Sudan—A two-day assault by the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied militias on displacement camps in Darfur has left over 100 people dead, including 20 children and nine aid workers, according to the United Nations.
The UN’s resident and humanitarian coordinator, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, stated that the Zamzam and Abu Shorouk camps, sheltering over 700,000 displaced people, and the city of el-Fasher were attacked on Friday and Saturday. Nine aid workers were killed while providing medical services at a health post in Zamzam camp. Relief International confirmed the deaths of nine of its staff, describing the attack as targeted against all health infrastructure. The attack also destroyed the central market in Zamzam and hundreds of homes.
The Sudanese Doctors’ Union specifically blamed the RSF for the deaths of six medical workers from Relief International, including a physician and the regional head. Zamzam and Abu Shouk are among five areas in Sudan currently experiencing famine, highlighting the catastrophic humanitarian crisis impacting approximately 25 million Sudanese.
The attacks represent a significant escalation in violence against civilians and aid workers in Darfur. The RSF has intensified its attacks on el-Fasher, the only state capital in Darfur still outside its control, following the army’s recapture of Khartoum last month. This follows a recent Amnesty International report documenting widespread sexual violence perpetrated by the RSF against women and girls. The UN has strongly condemned the attacks and urged an immediate cessation of hostilities.
