Sun Apr 13 12:20:23 UTC 2025: ## Sri Lanka Requests Rooftop Solar Power Shutdown to Prevent Blackout
**Colombo, April 13, 2025** – Sri Lanka’s state power entity has requested all rooftop solar power generators to switch off their systems from Sunday, April 13th, until April 21st to prevent a potential island-wide power outage. The request comes in response to unusually low electricity demand during the national New Year holiday, coupled with high solar energy generation.
According to a statement, the influx of solar power during the extended holiday period and sunny weather is creating an imbalance in the national grid, significantly reducing its inertia and making it vulnerable to even minor fluctuations. Officials fear that this could trigger widespread blackouts, similar to the island-wide outage experienced on February 9th, which was attributed to a surge in solar generation exceeding demand.
The requested shutdown applies from 3 pm daily, aiming to alleviate the strain on the grid caused by the discrepancy between high renewable energy production and low consumption. The temporary measure is intended to maintain grid stability and prevent a repeat of the February incident.
