**KYIV, April 13, 2025** – A devastating Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Sumy on Sunday killed at least 24 civilians, including one child, and injured 84 more, officials reported. The attack, which occurred around 10:15 a.m. local time during Palm Sunday celebrations, saw two ballistic missiles strike the city center. Graphic videos circulating online depict bodies amidst debris and smoke.
Acting Mayor Artem Kobzar described the event as a “terrible tragedy,” while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed ongoing rescue efforts and condemned the attack, stating that “dozens” of civilians were killed and wounded, calling the perpetrators “filthy scum.” He urged a global response, arguing that negotiations have failed to stop the violence and that Russia should be treated as a terrorist state.
This attack comes less than a day after accusations were traded between Russian and Ukrainian diplomats regarding violations of a U.S.-brokered deal to pause strikes on energy infrastructure. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Ukraine of ongoing attacks, while his Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, countered that Russia had launched numerous missiles and bombs targeting civilian areas since the agreement.
The Sumy strike marks the second large-scale attack targeting civilians in just over a week, following a similar attack on President Zelenskyy’s hometown of Kryvyi Rih on April 4th. The escalating violence underscores the ongoing challenges in negotiating an end to the three-year war.
