**Huntington Beach, CA** – A 25-foot gray whale, estimated to weigh 60,000 pounds, was discovered dead on Huntington Beach near Tower 7 on Friday, April 11th. The carcass, attracting attention on social media, prompted a response from the Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC) on Saturday. A necropsy is currently underway to determine the cause of death, which remains unknown.
Huntington Beach Marine Safety has cordoned off the area, and the city’s Public Works Department, with authorization from NOAA, plans to bury the whale on Sunday. The incident follows the recent stranding of a minke whale in Long Beach last week, which sadly had to be euthanized after becoming trapped in mud. While the minke whale’s situation was attributed to becoming stuck in shallow water, the cause of death for the gray whale remains under investigation.
